Colombia-headquartered Avianca Cargo has reported an increase in flower volumes handled for Mothers’ Day celebrations.

The freighter operator said that flower volumes from Colombia and Ecuador to US reached around 19,000 tons during this year’s Mothers’ Day celebration.

Juan Cruz Correa, Avianca Cargo vice president of sales, said: “We closed the Mothers’ Day season with around 300 operated flights, proud to contribute to one of the most important seasons for the flower industry and expecting to continue contributing to strengthening this sector for many years to come.”

Flowers for export from Colombia entered North America through Miami and the carrier’s recently added freighter flights to Los Angeles. Volumes from Ecuador mainly consisted of roses.

Augusto Solano, president of Colombian flower exporter association Asocolflores, added: “During this Mothers’ Day season, the main destination for Colombian Flower exports is the US, representing 84% of total exports.

“Roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, hydrangeas, and alstroemerias, among others, reach the homes of thousands of people thanks to the joint work between the different actors in the logistics chain.”
